Teddy's Journey Through Lymphoma Treatment with AVSE Oncology

Teddy the dog

The Initial Diagnosis

Teddy's journey started when he was taken to a local ER due to a rectal prolapse caused by straining. During the examination, an abdominal ultrasound revealed several enlarged lymph nodes. Samples were taken and examined under a microscope, leading to the diagnosis of lymphoma. He was then referred to our Oncology Service at AVSE for specialized treatment.

First Steps in Treatment

Upon arrival at AVSE, Teddy underwent bloodwork to ensure his body was healthy enough to handle chemotherapy. The results were positive, allowing him to begin his first dose of chemotherapy under the CHOP protocol, a multi-agent chemotherapy regimen named after the drugs used in rotation throughout treatment. CHOP is the most effective induction chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma. Chemotherapy works by targeting rapidly dividing cells, which include cancer cells, helping to slow or stop their growth.

Further Testing and Diagnosis

To further pinpoint the type of lymphoma, additional testing called flow cytometry was conducted. This test helped Dr. Vidal determine whether Teddy's lymphoma was T-cell or B-cell. The results confirmed that Teddy has B-cell lymphoma, a specific type of lymphoma that requires a tailored approach in treatment.

Progress and Positive Outcomes

Teddy is now in his second cycle (out of four) of CHOP therapy and is responding well to the treatment. He remains cheerful, energetic, and full of life, much to the delight of our team. We eagerly anticipate his weekly visits, which have become a highlight for both Teddy and our staff.

A Special Bond

One heartwarming aspect of Teddy's journey is the bond he has formed with our Oncology staff, particularly with Ashley. Initially, Teddy had to wear a basket muzzle during his visits, but as he grew more comfortable, he no longer needed it. Now, he eagerly runs to Ashley at each appointment, a testament to the trust and affection that has developed between them.

Conclusion

Teddy's story is a testament to the resilience of our furry friends and the effectiveness of the treatment plans we provide through our Oncology team at AVSE. We look forward to seeing Teddy continue to thrive as he progresses through his chemotherapy cycles, bringing joy to everyone he meets along the way.

Fun Fact

Weekly chemotherapy treatments often lead to close bonds between our patients and the Oncology staff. Teddy, for instance, is absolutely smitten with Ashley, one of our team members, and the feeling is mutual!
